Bunker Shot (around the Green & fairway bunker)

Bunker Around the Green

For a basic sand shot around the green, a few simple setup adjustment is required.
First, play the ball well forward, opposite your front heel, so your hands are slightly  behind the ball.
Second, take a wide stance to support the firm swing.
Lastly, open the clubface slightly and regrip the club handle and align your body left to compensate the open club face.

From this setup, make a half-back-swing, but fully hinging your wrists and swing into the sand about 2 inches behind the ball.
Try to make a shallow cut, holding the clubface open or pointing to the sky well after impact. Ensure to accelerate into the finish.

The golf club (sand wedge) cannot touch the sand at practice swings, otherwise there will be a penalty stroke.

My tips :

  • open your stance
  • anchor your feet (by twisting your feet into the sand)
  • choke down on the grip to make up for the buried feet.
  • aim left to the target (as you cut the ball which will roll/spin to the right)
  • place your hands slightly in front of the ball
  • swing the club head from outside to inside ( not inside-out)

Fairway Bunker

  • Anchor your feet,
  • a compact swing with good rhythm will prevent losing balance,
  • choke down on the grip to make up the buried feet,
  • do not use much lower body moment as usual.

With a Wood

  • open your stance
  • place the ball at back of your left heel
  • open the clubface slightly
  • aim left of the target to compensate for a small fade

With an Iron

  • close your stance
  • place the ball in the middle of your stance
  • close the clubface slightly
  • aim slightly to the right of the target to compensate for a small draw
