Ball Positions

Leaving the ball in one position is easier to repeat and should lead to greater consistency.

Experiment to find out what best suits you.

Jack Nicklaus is the most famous advocate of this philosophy.

Experiment to find out what best suits you. Keeping the ball in one position, however, is more consistent and easier to repeat.

As a drill, position the ball opposite your LEFT ARMPIT and vary the width of your stance relative to the club you are using. This encourages the club to arrive repeatedly at the base of the swing arc.

Woods: Maintaining the equation of the ball to your left foot, widen the stance by moving the right foot farther away and place about 55 percent more weight into the right side. The lowering of the right side will help you hit the ball on more of an ascending approach.

Mid-irons: The ball should be opposite the left armpit, stance shoulder-width and weight evenly distributed.

Short irons: Narrow the stance and place about 55 percent weight on the left foot. The lowering of the left side will help you hit more down on the ball.
